Lewes is a historic market town in the South Downs National Park and is a special place to live and visit.  Unlike so many market towns it has maintained a unique character with an interesting range of independent shops.  If you love antiques there are plenty of broquante style shops where you can browse for hours. 

Many artists and musicians live here so there are several art galleries and a varied musical and artistic programme.  

For those interested in the Bloomsbury Group, sisters Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell lived near Lewes at Monk's House and Charleston Farmhouse respectively - open from Easter to the end of October. 

Food lovers will be happy exploring the many pubs and restaurants.  We can offer everything from really good pub food at the Snowdrop Inn just a minute's walk away to more expensive modern British and ethnic restaurants.  

Lewes is home to Harvey's Brewery - which has been at the centre of Lewes life since 1790.   They brew a wonderful range of cask ales including the ever popular Best - which you can buy in their shop in the Cliffe.

On the first Saturday of every month a Farmers' Market comes to town and there's often a musical accompaniment - whether from local musicians or Morris dancers in the summer!   And on Friday mornings we have a lively  Food market which is housed in the old Market Tower

The OCTOBERFEAST Festival is a 10 day extravaganza celebrating our wonderful local food and drink.   

Lewes is also wonderfully situated to explore Sussex and Kent.   Brighton is only eight miles away and easily reached by a regular bus and train service.  Famous nearby landmarks include the chalk cliffs at Beachy Head and at Seven Sisters Country Park -marvellous places for walkers.    Famous gardens nearby include Sheffield Park, Nymans, Leonardslee and Borde Hill.
